Thanks, LiA, for an exceedingly entertaining evening at our house. Mother McCree’s has, hands-down, the funniest BIODTL ever. Whodathunk it needed a kazoo.

I searched on Mother McCree’s after seeing your comment – I know there’s a CD, but it’s too pricey, so I hadn’t heard it – and amazingly, it's on the LMA. It's not under the GD Archives, but "Community Audio."

So I played some. Naturally, I sampled BIODTL. It was so, um, different, that I put it on for my kid, who laughed so hard his stomach hurt and he had to go the bathroom. When he came back, it wasn’t finished, so I hit continue, and he bolted for the bathroom AGAIN, whooping and hollering!

Does anyone have a rec for Best BIODTL to counter that? I swear, I may never hear that song the same way again.

Now, speaking of kids, a moment of (shocked) silence please as we reflect on the fact that, when the July 1964 Mother McCree’s recording was made, Bobby was all of 16. My stomach-clutching, whooping and hollering kid is 14. This is rather hard to process ... I mean, not only was Bob playing (in a manner of speaking) with Jerry Garcia at 16, but his parents let him hang out with PIGPEN! (Although, as we know from the newsletter, Pigpen did shower. At least later on.)

My fav BIODTL is unfortunately not here on the Archive - it's from the Ladies & Gentleman release of the Fillmore East shows, April 1971. I like it because Jerry does a real nice train whistle sound for the second verse, and the band is unusually tight and crisp... and it ends with a nice pot-flash explosion right in tempo. Everything works. Also notable - compare "Ain't It Crazy" from the McCrees version to the version on L&G - PigPen makes it nice and raunchy, with a tight solo from Jerry.

I tried to find a comparable one - this one is close, but lacks that magic X factor...
